Seriously...who didn't go to EFY when they were 14?
When I was 14 and at EFY, and I was sitting in a class. There was this REALLY cute, REALLY funny EFY counselor (she was a gal) that was teaching (I obviously looking up to her). I was enjoying her lesson SO much. She started to tell a story about her hiking 50 miles in 24 hours.
I made up my mind in that very instance that I would someday hike 50 miles in 24 hours.
Fast forward to about 4 years ago. I was dating Spencer (well we were "broken" up...broken up with benefits). It was the middle of summer. I was board. I hadn't run or worked out in about 5 months.
WHAT BETTER TIME TO WALK 50 MILES IN 24 HOURS?????
So I decided it was time to fulfill my dreams! I told Spencer about it, and he said NO!
I told my Dad about it...he said YES (my dad and I are kindred spirit when it comes to stuff like this).
We started to plan. I decided to walk during the night...to avoid the heat (little did we REMEMBER that Arizona is still blistering hot at night in the middle of summer). We also decided that since none of us were in shape, that we better just walk along the b-line highway. We figured out that it was 26 miles from our house to the saguaro lake turn off, and then 26 miles back. A little over 50 miles, but we were going to walk there and back in 24 hours....sounds like SO much fun, huh?
So we planned a day. Spencer kept saying no, but then the day before we were going to go he said yes.
The day came, and we headed out.

We walked. We walked down Country Club, then over to the 202 entrance on Alma School. Then we walked past the AJ's gas station. Then we walked past the land fill. Then we walked past the Casino. Then we kept walking....and walking...
Some police officers stopped to ask us what we were doing? We told them...they laughed...
After about 6 hours of walking...we started dying. It was horrible. EVERY part of my body hurt. Spencer and I were about 10 mins BEHIND my dad. I am telling you...my dad is an animal (we won't go into the fact that I was a little let down that my dad was faster than Spencer)!
There were moments that I thought I could not walk another step. There were moments that I didn't walk another step. But we FINALLY came to the turn off. TWENTY SIX MILES! People...there was no way in HELL that I was going to walk the rest of the way home. My mom came and picked us up.
I have never been so sweaty, so gross, so chafed, and IN SO MUCH FREAKING PAIN in my life. I am willing to bet that child birth was not as bad as the pain I felt from walking 26 miles in the summer heat, in the middle of the night, when I had barely walked the MCC parking lot for the past 5 months! I am not joking.
I had someone whiff baby powder on my bum...took some SERIOUS pain killers, and didn't wake up till...I don't even know when.
My dad wanted to wake up the next morning and walk the rest of the way...like I said..he is part cheetah!
Moral of the story. TRAIN before you try and walk 50 miles in 24 hours! By the way...the EFY counselor talked about training...I guess I missed that part?
PS: I am going to finish...I just have to get into tip top shape!

You could do one of those 3-day walks for breast cancer. They give you a program for training and it's for a great cause! A friend of mine did it several years ago and really loved it.
VERY worthy goal!
(I cracked up when you said this happened when you and Spencer had broken up...Grant and I broke up and reconciled a couple of times before he finally asked me to marry him instead of keeping up that brewhaha.)
WOW! I never heard this story before. What a great dad you have. My dad would have NEVER done that!
Awesome!!! I wish I could train and do it with you!
You are so funny! I would never in my life have the desire to do that. Props to you! I know you'll finish! I'm impressed you made it 26 miles!
That's an amazing story! :D
I love how you mentioned you were chaffed, I swear your posts always make me laugh. I'm way impressed that you went 26 miles, that's a full blown marathon! Even though you considered yourself to be out of shape when you did this I'm pretty sure you were in better than I am now. I was struggling just to keep up with you and Kathleen on our little walk around the ranch at the reunion, I am the definition of lame.
You are crazy. I remember standing there watching you guys walk off into the sunset and I laughed. I cant believe you did that.
My favorite part of the whole post was your saying your dad was part cheetah. You crack me up.
Isn't it ridiculous how awesome our parents' generation is? My parents work me into the ground regularly. I'm totally proud of you for 26 miles! You're a machine!
Oh my gosh - what a flippin' funny story! That made me laugh out loud!
Haha, I can't believe you guys actually did that! I have no desire what.so.ever. However, the EFY part of the story I can completely relate to. I remember just eatin' those talks up. I thought my counselors were the coolest people on earth and probably would have done anything they told me to.
That is amazing!
Your dad is a boss!
holy crap! Kudos to you for walking 26 miles though. I don't think I could do it. Even with a lot of training. I'd get bored & want to stop haha. I know you can do it though! Good Luck! PS love your stories. You crack me up!
Ha ha, that made me laugh so many times. Great, great story. (Seth and I were broken up with benefits more than once as well).
I said it before and I'll say it again-- you guys are nuts!
