Our Garden

OK, so growing up my parents had the mother load of fruit trees, and THE HUGEST garden on the face of the plant. I HATED it. As a matter of fact I would go as far to say that I hated it with a passion. There was nothing worse than having to work in the garden, and THEN having to can the fruits and veggies. I HATED IT! I could go all year without stepping foot in my parents backyard (this also has to do with the fact that they have roach's in their backyard in the summer...and I don't go where the roach's roam).
Anyways, I would always swear to myself that I would NEVER EVER have a garden or fruit trees myself. AND I WOULD NEVER CAN!
Now that I have my own house...I find myself wanting a garden. It is beyond weird for me to admit this. I just get mad at myself for not having one when I drop 35 bucks at the farmers market for fresh organic fruits and veggies. So Spencer finally jumped on the band wagon, and has been working his tail end off getting our garden ready. We are doing the "square foot" gardening method. Everyone SWEARS by it. In all honesty I feel a little partial to the "row method" just b/c that is what my parents do. But I am trying to step out of my box.
So right now we have Tomato's, Cucumbers, Squash, Onions, Zucchini, and Cantaloupe growing. I am so excited I can barely stand it. I just want TONS of veggies. But we will see if me and Spencer can keep these suckers alive. I mean I guess that we have done a decent job with keeping Grace alive...
Now that I have a garden growing in my backyard I feel like I am 35 instead of 22. Seriously...I feel like I have entered into the adult world.
Here are so pictures...

The picture of our WHOLE backyard is to show to TRUE white trashiness. I just look at that picture and it screams "you are white trash". I don't know why...our backyard is just terrible looking. I wish that I would fix it up, but then that takes time and money, and most importantly ENERGY!!! So it remains ugly. Hopefully the grass will fill in this summer, and look somewhat better.

It's still way too cold to start ours, but I'm going to try the square foot one this time, too! I'm really excited.

Good luck with the garden. Our first attempt was an epic fail last year. This year we are gonna try a "salsa garden" and only grow stuff we would use in salsa and I will become a great homemade salsa maker.

Cute tires! Good luck keeping your dog out of the gardens, that was the downfall of our last garden. Oh and FYI our neighborhood has lots of stray cats who love the SFG mix. Sprinkling Cayene pepper on the dirt every couple days seems to help!
